The world-famous city of London is a dream destination for many, and it's easy to see why! Its convenient location makes it the perfect gateway to explore Europe. From its stunning architecture to its vibrant culture, there’s something unique waiting around every corner in this remarkable metropolis.
Whether you decide to spend days (or weeks!) exploring everything this iconic city has to offer, one thing is certain – you’ll be left wishing your visit had lasted just a little bit longer! Here are some of the best ways to make the most out of your time spent in London.
Best London Attractions
If you're looking for an unforgettable vacation spot, London should be at the top of your list. From vibrant markets to historic monuments and diverse culture, this bustling city has something for everyone. The Tower of London, the London Eye, and Trafalgar Square are just a few London attractions that must not be missed during your stay.
With its countless amazing sights and experiences, London is an unmissable travel destination for all explorers. With so many options to choose from while you're here, it can be hard to fit everything into your itinerary.
Lucky for you, we compiled a list of the most iconic activities that you absolutely can't miss when you visit the city. Below are our top picks for the best things to do in London which include its top tourist attractions:
1. Ride a Hop-on Hop-Off Bus
Welcome to London, or what I like to call the "classier and cleaner version of New York City". When it comes to deciding how best to explore the delights of this stunning city, I always suggest starting with a Hop-on Hop-off Bus tour! Not only is it an easy way to get around quickly but there are several other advantages too. Here are some reasons why you should jump on board:
You can see the top attractions in London in one day
You get the best view from the top of the bus (versus a bike or car)
You get an audio tour and a means of transportation for a one-time fee
The buses stop at all the major sites - you can choose to get off at each stop or stay on the bus
If you're visiting London for the first time, a hop-on/hop-off bus tour should be at the top of your must-do list! Big Bus and TootBus are two popular companies that operate around London, so make sure to check them out. You'll hit all of the best London attractions in no time with one of these tours - plus it's incredibly convenient since they take similar routes throughout the city.
Then once you've crossed off most of the items from your sightseeing itinerary by bus, decide which spots are worth a closer look and revisit those places during your stay. With this activity as part of your vacation plans, trust us when we say: you won't regret it!
2. Visit Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge in London is not only one of the world's most iconic bridges, but also my favorite. Whenever I'm in town, I make sure to cross it as many times as possible because its elegance never fails to captivate me.
What a lot of people don't know is that you can gain access inside and walk across the glass floor connecting both towers! An entry ticket costs just $13.65 (11.40 GBP) if bought at the entrance, giving you full access to this breathtaking exhibition!
For an unforgettable experience, take the stairs or elevator to the skywalk! There you can watch a brief video about the bridge's history before walking across one of the glass-top walkways. Be prepared for a unique adventure: with moving cars below, it may be trippy and dizzying if heights are not your thing but nevertheless is truly awesome!
To ensure you can enjoy all that Tower Bridge and the Tower of London have to offer, book an early access tour. Visiting both in one day is possible if you plan ahead! Seeing the bridge usually takes 1.5-2 hours while exploring the entire Tower of London requires much more time - aim for at least half a day to take it all in properly.
3. Spend the Day Exploring the Tower of London
If you are looking for a must-see attraction in London, then the Tower of London should be on top of your list. From its remarkable preservation to its unique historical significance, this was one of my favorite tourist attractions and I guarantee it will become yours too!
Having served as not only a royal palace but also a prison over centuries, many famous names from Great Britain's medieval history have walked between these walls. So if castles and culture fascinate you, don't miss out on an opportunity to visit Tower Bridge - it would be an unforgettably intriguing experience that can easily be enjoyed by simply purchasing an entry ticket here.
If you're short on time while exploring the historic Tower of London, then make sure to begin your experience at The White Tower. This fortress-like structure is home to a wide array of medieval armor and weapons, making it an absolute must-see for history lovers!
As far as I found out during my visit, three hours simply wasn't enough time to witness everything this breathtaking site has to offer - so beginning here guarantees that nothing remarkable or historical will be missed! Afterward, explore the famous Crown Jewels Exhibition (which is an incredible sight).
Also, don't forget to tour the tower where royals held their prisoners and wildlife. There are a lot of historic buildings and attractions here that you can discover if you stay for an entire day – opening times range from nine in the morning until five at night with varying hours throughout different seasons so remember to double-check on their website before heading out!
4. Go Shopping on Regent Street
Take a leisurely stroll through London's iconic Regent Street, where stone-paved roads will lead you to an array of retailers from Piccadilly Circus until the entrance of Regent's Park. Whether your budget is large or small, there are all types of stores - similar to Boston’s Newbury Street – that offer big brands and bargain finds.
So if you're seeking free activities in London while taking in its stunning architecture, window shopping along this historic street might be just what you need! Here you can find some of the world's most renowned retailers, including Burberry, Zara, and Michael Kors.
After you've finished shopping around the area, be sure to grab a bite from one of many nearby restaurants or coffee shops. Additionally, if you're fortunate enough to visit during the holiday season - it is an absolute must-see for Christmas lights and decorations!
5. Check Out the View From the Shard
The Shard is the unmistakable towering glass structure that stands out from London's skyline. Even though it doesn't blend in with its surroundings, it still seems to fit perfectly into the city. Not only does this modern building serve various purposes, but also holds one of London's highest observation decks - The View From The Shard.
From our last visit, I can easily say that it was one of the best attractions in London. Found on three levels inside the tower, visitors can ascend and enjoy a meal or drink while admiring all of London from high above! Get a unique 360-degree view of the city and take some stunning photos with an iconic red telephone booth, and a breathtakingly beautiful wall covered in patriotic colors.
If you're looking for something to do that will give you plenty of gorgeous shots for Instagram, then make sure you include The View from the Shard on your must-do list! Get your entry tickets here today!
6. Take a Day Trip to Stone Henge
If you view Stone Henge as more than just a pile of rocks, I highly recommend taking the time to visit it for yourself. Of course, there's always the option of getting there independently by train - which is not only cost-effective but also allows you some freedom in planning your trip.
However, the best way to go explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site is definitely with a guided tour from London that includes transportation; this eliminates any confusion and requires no effort on your part other than simply enjoying the scenery while being dazzled by an experienced guide who can share their knowledge with you throughout the journey.
If you're interested in a Half-Day Tour to Stonehenge from London, your journey will begin with either a coach bus or car picking you up at an assigned location within the city.
Round trip travel time between London and Stonehenge may take around two hours (depending on traffic), and then it'll require approximately 30 minutes for visitors to get from the tourist center to their destination. Therefore, I highly recommend spending about 2-3 hours visiting this iconic landmark!
To make the most of your day trip to England's countryside, why not book a full tour that includes several sites? I did just this when I visited Stone Henge. The excursion included an exciting stop in the city of Bath, and of course transportation from London there and back again. It was an unforgettable experience.
This is convenient if you wish to visit Stone Henge and another location but don't want to make multiple trips on different days. Prepare for a jam-packed day when visiting two separate destinations! Although it may seem rushed, you will certainly have an incredible time. Here are some of the best tours from London to witness Stone Henge and other remarkable places:
7. Ride the London Eye
Visiting London without a trip on the iconic and majestic London Eye is like vacationing in New York City, but missing out on Times Square. As one of the top tourist attractions in London, this walk-in Ferris wheel in South Bank should be at the top of your list if you're traveling with children. Annually it welcomes millions to its observation pods - so why not add yourself to those numbers?
The London Eye experience lasts around 60 minutes as the giant slowly rotates; during that time you can remain snuggled up or explore every inch of their glass-enclosed capsules. When your capsule reaches the top of the wheel, you get a magnificent view of Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster - the meeting place of the British Government.
If this is something that has been on your bucket list for ages, then I recommend buying an entry ticket online right away to avoid waiting in line at the ticket office. After you've purchased your ticket, there will still be some queuing up required before entering - but don't worry as it usually doesn't take long.
The London Eye is always bustling with people throughout each day of every week - yet trust me when I say that this tourist attraction is totally worth waiting in line for!
8. Stroll Around Notting Hill
Notting Hill is arguably London's prettiest neighborhood, embodied by its signature vibrant houses and tiny streets. When the weather is good, this area makes for a great place to explore on foot; photograph enthusiasts should take note as well!
Other activities here include visiting Portobello Road Market for shopping galore and delectable street food – it’s certainly worth adding to your itinerary if you're ever in town! I was especially taken by all the delicious food options as well as its vibrant streetscapes - if I were to move to London this would be my first choice without hesitation!
If you're a movie buff, then the neighborhood of Notting Hill is for you! You'll recognize some spots that have been featured in films like Love Actually and Notting Hill featuring Hugh Grant. Or join up with fellow movie-lovers and take a Film Locations and Stars tour. Aside from being cinematically inclined, there's plenty other things to to enjoy here too.
9. Have Afternoon Tea on a Double-Decker Bus
For an unforgettable cultural experience in London, afternoon tea on a double-decker bus is simply unmissable. I would highly recommend booking the journey through Get Your Guide! We were welcomed with coffee and tea upon our arrival at Victoria Coach Station before embarking on the 1.5-hour journey to take in some of London's most iconic sights.
Not only did we enjoy stunning views of renowned landmarks, but also indulged ourselves in scrumptious treats from Brigit's Afternoon Tea. Though the double-decker bus was a bit bumpy due to its age, cup holders had been installed on the tables to keep your tea in place. The entire experience was loads of fun! The best part was getting a guided tour of London while sipping afternoon tea - what could be more delightful?
10. Try out the Street Food
Exploring a new city doesn't have to be limited to sightseeing tours; you can also get familiar with the culture through its cuisine. London is renowned for having some of the most delicious and diverse food offerings in all of Europe, if not the world!
Rather than dining at an expensive restaurant every meal, I suggest checking out one of London's many incredible food markets - that way you can experience authentic flavors from around the globe without breaking your budget. My last trip to London included a visit to Borough Market, an outdoor food hall filled with vendors offering incredible culinary choices like sandwiches, hand-made pasta and cream-filled donuts.
With the abundance of options available, there was no way we could have tasted them all but luckily those that we did sample were by far some of the most delicious and unforgettable dishes I’ve ever had.
Located right by London Bridge, Borough Market was one of my favorite spots in the city. Below are a few of the top foods that we tried there:
Pistachio donut - Bread Ahead Bakery
Wild boar tortellini with butter/sage sauce - La Tua Pasta
Salt beef sandwich - Northfield Farm & Butchery
Despite Borough Market being my ultimate go-to spot, it's certainly not the only exceptional market in London. Camden Market, Portobello Market, and Mercato Metropolitano are also worth a visit!
If you're an avid foodie looking for something special during your stay in London, why not join one of many guided food tours offered by locals? You'll get to explore some of the city's hidden culinary gems and discover unique local cuisine - a memorable experience indeed! Check out these options below:
11. Big Ben & Palace of Westminster
If want to experience one of the most iconic tourist attractions in London, then Big Ben is a must-see. Instantly recognizable, this tall clock tower faces the River Thames and both liven up and dominate the skyline. Its real name is the Elizabeth Tower, yet it's informally known as ‘Big Ben’ due to the huge bell at its heart.
Taking a picture with Big Ben is a surefire way to make everyone in your family jealous. Plus, it's an extremely tall and beautiful structure that will become a great addition to any photographic collection! Sadly, however, non-UK citizens are not allowed inside the tower - but they can still take plenty of great pictures from outside!
The massive structure attached to Big Ben is known as the Palace of Westminster, which is home to the Houses of Parliament. This is where much of Britain's political activity takes place. If you're interested in visiting this amazing structure, entrance to the public galleries are open on a daily basis.
You can take a tour with guides who provide information on how laws and democracy work, or simply explore the Gothic Revival-style decorations and corridors. Whether it's witnessing firsthand debates between politicians or learning about British history within its walls; it's sure to be a breathtaking experience that will stay with you forever.
